Summary: Performs correctional officers duties: Supervision of inmates; physical intervention; maintenance of facility security, human relations and problem solving; discipline and control of inmate behavior; inmate/visitor search; and emergency assistance.

Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizen
  • High School diploma or GED certificate
  • Age: Minimum of 20 years; or, 18 years upon successful completion of military reserve basic training; no maximum age limitation
  • Upon hiring, valid Texas driver's license and proof of liability insurance
  • Not ever have been or currently on court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years
  • Not currently under indictment for any criminal offense
  • Not ever have been convicted of an offense above the grade of a Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years
  • Never have been convicted of any family violence offense
  • Is not prohibited by state or federal law from operating a motor vehicle
  • Is not prohibited by state or federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition
  • Previous military personnel
    a. Honorable discharge free from conditions
    b. No convictions of any court martial higher than a summary
  • Achieve satisfactory results on the medical and psychological/emotional health exams
  • Achieve satisfactory background history clearance: credit, family, neighborhood, employer(s), etc.
  • Males, who are at least 18 years old but have not attained the age of 26 years old, must be registered with the Selective Service prior to being hired.

Applicants must successfully complete each phase of the selection process listed below:
1. Detention officer entrance written exam
2. Physical fitness assessment test to proceed in selection process - minimum standards are the same for both male and female:

Second physical fitness assessment test will be administered after successful completion of the 4th phase (oral interview)and within one month prior to the psychological evaluation/medical examination. Must meet minimum standards to start academy.

3. Background investigation (Sensitive or confidential aspects of personal lives will be explored.)
4. Oral interview
5. Psychological evaluation conducted by psychologist.
6. Medical Exam conducted by physician using medical standards

Expected duration of the selection process is approximately 8-12 months.

Applicants failing any phase may reapply.
