WHEN: Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at 10:00 a.m.
WHY: A total of 3 people will be promoted to ranks varying from Law Enforcement Sergeant to Detention Corporal. Two other individuals were recognized. One was recognized for assisting the Sheriff’s office with acquiring vests for K-9’s in the region and the other was named Master Sergeant.
Promoted to the rank of Sergeant, Deputy Jose Luis Hernandez
Deputy Jose Luis Hernandez began his career with the Sheriff’s Office, as a Detention Officer, in January of 1994. He was appointed Deputy Sheriff assigned to patrol in February of 1998. He is a graduate of Riverside High School class of 1991. He holds an Advanced Peace Officer certification and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal Award in November of 2003.

Promoted to the rank of Corporal, Detention Officer Mario A. Ramirez
Detention Officer Mario A. Ramirez began his career with the Sheriff’s Office in February 28, 2001. Officer Ramirez obtained his G.E.D. certificate from the New Mexico State Board of Education in September of 1993. He attends El Paso Community College (Criminal Justice Degree). He holds an Advanced Jailer Proficiency Certification.

Promoted to the rank of Corporal, Detention Officer Christopher Contreras
Detention Officer Christopher Contreras began his career with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office in July 12, 1999. He is a graduate of Coronado High School, class of 1994. He served in United States Navy for 3 years. He presently holds an Advanced Jailer Proficiency Certification.

Honorary Title bestowed upon Sergeant Scott Mann “Master Sergeant”
This title was enacted in 2006. It is an honorary position for which no additional pay is awarded. Sergeants selected for this honor epitomize the operational first line supervisory position of sergeant and have consistently demonstrated exemplary levels of knowledge, performance, leadership and organizational skills. Nominations must be made by a Lieutenant or above in the operational bureau. The person nominated must also serve five years or more in grade as Sergeant and hold a Master Peace Officer or Master Jailers Certificate. The nomination process includes a board made up of senior officers and members of the community.
Master Sergeant Scott Mann Joined the Sheriff’s Office in 1987 and was appointed to Deputy Sheriff in 1989. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1995. The twenty year veteran is a Master Peace Officer with numerous awards; Good Conduct Award, Certificate of Appreciation, Unit Citation, Patrol Division Unit Citation and Certificate of Merit. He is a Graduate, Management Institute of Texas, FBI National Academy, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from the University of Phoenix and a Masters Degree in Management from the University of Phoenix.

Certificate of Appreciation awarded to Yamil S. Peraza
Deputy Yamil S. Peraza was recognized for initiating the process to obtain armor vests for the K-9’s for several law enforcement agencies in El Paso County and Southern New Mexico. He joined the Sheriff’s Office in September of 2000. He is a member of the Search and Rescue Team.
