RELEASE DATE & TIME: Thursday, November 8, 2007 2:45 PM
WHO: United States Marshals Service – Lone Star Fugitive Task Force and El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
WHAT: Arrest of Murder suspect Abraham Cavazos.
WHERE: El Paso County, Texas.
WHEN: Wednesday, November 7, 2007 at approximately 7 PM.
WHY: Wanted for the Murder of Rogelio Roy Terrazas on December 12, 2004. The incident occurred at 5220 Bradley Rd. a residence in east El Paso County, Texas. Preliminary investigation indicates an altercation took place between two male subjects at a party. The altercation started as a verbal argument before it escalated into a shooting.
BACKGROUND: Task Force members received information that Cavazos (29 years old) was in Torreon, México. The information was passed on to Mexican law enforcement officials. Surveillance was set up and Cavazos was arrested on (06/12/2007) around 10:30 p.m. He reportedly put up a struggle and was taken into custody by Instituto Nacional de Migración (IMN) Mexican Immigration Officials. He was transferred to the custody of officials from Agencia Federal de Investigacion (AFI). Cavazos was in México City, México waiting for an extradition hearing. He was officially turned over to Sheriff's Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division yesterday.
“Detectives have been tracking him for two years. They thought on several occasions they had him. On one occasion in August of 2006 the task Force was breathing down his neck until he eluded capture from Mexican law enforcement,” said Sergeant Jim Belknap, Criminal Investigation Division El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
“In perspective it came as no surprise that Cavazos put up a struggle. We always listed him as armed and very dangerous. We close this chapter of this case and wait for the trial,” said Sergeant Jim Belknap, Criminal Investigation Division, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
“On international cases we rely heavily on our partnership with the U.S. Marshals. Cavazos is sitting in the county jail today and the Task Force and Mexican authorities deserve a big pat on the back for helping us on this case. It takes strong cooperation on both sides of the border to fight crime,” said Assistant Chief Ralph Mitchell, Law Enforcement Bureau, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
