ASSISTANT CHIEF RALPH MITCHELL
On Friday, July 25, 2008, Assistant Chief Ralph Mitchell retired from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office after 30 years of service.
Assistant Chief Ralph Mitchell began his career as a Detective with the Sheriff’s Office in February of 1979. He was promoted to his present rank in October 13, 2005. Born and raised in Philadelphia, he is a graduate of South Philadelphia High School class of 1959. After serving 20 years in the United States Army, he retired in 1979 and joined the Sheriffs Office the same year.
Chief Mitchell holds a Bachelors Degree in Political Science from the University of Nebraska and a Master of Arts Degree in Human Relation from Webster University.
He is a Master Peace Officer and a Certified Instructor. In his 30 years with the Sheriff’s Office he has accumulated a tremendous amount of Awards and letters of appreciation from organizations such as U.S. Department of Justice, United Way, Victory Warriors, Special Olympics, and El Paso Community College, for his contribution to the community.
Married to his wife Paula Rae Gates Mitchell for 35 years & the proud dad of Daniel Mitchell.

On Monday, 08-04-08 during Commissioners Court, a Paso Del Norte Award was presented to retired El Paso County Sheriff Office Assistant Chief, Ralph Mitchell, as a token of appreciation for his 30 years of exemplary service to the citizens of El Paso County.
Chief Mitchell recognized & praised for the work he has done in and for the community.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office in March of 2001 was the first Sheriff’s Office in the State of Texas to be Internationally Accredited from CALEA and is now the recipient of the First CALEA Tri-Arc award in Texas (4th in the Nation) to have accreditations in: Law Enforcement, Communications, Training Academy.
