SHERIFF RICHARD WILES SUPPORTS TYLA VIDEO PROGRAM AIMED AT DOMESTIC ABUSE VICTIMS

EL PASO, TEXASOn March 20, 2009 a video program was introduced to El Paso County Commissioners Court by the Texas Young Lawyers Association. The video helps victims of domestic violence navigate the state’s legal system is the idea behind a The program, “HEALING THE WOUNDS: NAVIGATING THE LEGAL SYSTEM AFTER SURVIVING DOMESTIC ABUSE” includes details on what the victims can expect when utilizing the courts to obtain a protective order, temporary restraining order or divorce.

The video portrays the story of "Melinda," a domestic violence survivor, and her journey through the legal process. The goal of the program is to educate victims of family violence about their legal rights.

Hopefully, after viewing this program, some of the victim's fear and confusion about the legal system will be eliminated.

This program is designed to be shown at battered women's shelters, police departments, county and district attorney's offices and other agencies that assist victims of domestic abuse.

"Healing the Wounds: Navigating the Legal System after Surviving Domestic Abuse", was made possible by a generous grant from the Texas Bar Foundation.
