ATV ACCIDENT IN SPARKS
SPARKS- Late Sunday afternoon 04-05-09 at about 5:00 PM, Deputies were dispatched to the 300 block of Clemson in Sparks El Paso County, TX in reference to an ATV accident with serious injuries. Deputies arrived moments later to find a 14 year-old & 6 year-old male injured after riding an ATV & colliding with a parked pick-up truck. Due to the severity of the accident, Sheriff’s Office SPECIAL TRAFFIC INVESTIGATORS (STI’s) were summoned to the scene.
Preliminary Investigation by STI’s determined two male children, ages 14 and 6, were traveling west on Clemson on a blue 2005 Kawasaki 250cc ATV. The 14 year old driver lost control of the ATV while driving on a curve on a dirt residential roadway causing the right front tire to strike a properly parked Ford F-350.
- The 6 year old male passenger struck the side view mirror of the parked truck with his head, causing a severe laceration / head injury which required immediate surgery. The 6 year-old was last listed in stable but serious condition with possible life threatening injuries.
- The 14 year old sustained non-life threatening injuries.
The children were transported to Thomason Hospital by Life Ambulance.
BOTH CHILDREN WERE NOT WEARING PROTECTIVE HEADGEAR AT THE TIME OF THE CRASH.
According to several witnesses, the children were frequently seen traveling recklessly through the area on the ATV prior to the crash. Dispatch Operators had just received a 911 call in reference to these children on the ATV minutes before the crash- Deputies were responding to the area when the call came out.
