RESULT: ARREST MADE
UPPER VALLEY- Early Wednesday afternoon 04-22-09 at about 2:25 PM, a Sheriff’s Deputy patrolling the area of Borderland and Doniphan in the Upper Valley observed a Black 2005 Ford F-150 truck traveling southbound Doniphan directly in front of the Sheriff’s Unit. The Deputy then observed the F-150 an make a left turn from a non-turning lane (improper left turn). The Deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the truck but the driver refused to stop. The F-150 continued north on Doniphan at high speeds. The truck took an abrupt left turn (west) at the 100 block of FM 259. The F-150 continued west & suddenly stopped at the top of an overpass (bridge) that travels over the Rio Grande. At the grade of the bridge, the truck suddenly stopped facing west on the eastbound lanes of travel. The Deputy observed the driver discard an unknown item into the river. The driver proceeded to exit the truck, climb the rail & jump into the river in attempt to elude capture. Assisting Deputies set a perimeter where the driver could not escape. The driver has taken into custody without further incident. The discarded item thrown into the river has not yet been found.
The driver was identified as identified as VICTOR CANO (26) of the 600 block of Washington Street Anthony, TX. He was arrested & charged with EVADING ARREST / DETENTION w/ a MOTOR VEHICLE.
During the end of the pursuit as the truck suddenly stopped at the grade of the bridge, the Sheriff’s Unit slightly impacted with the rear end of the truck causing no significant damage to the truck & minimal damage to the patrol car. No injuries were reported.
TRAFFIC WAS LIGHT & NO PEDESTRIANS WERE SEEN NEAR THE ROADWAYS OF TRAVEL DURING THE PURSUIT.
