EL PASO COUNTY, TX– Late Tuesday night 06-02-09 at about 11:30 PM, a Sheriff’s Deputy observed a yellow Chevy truck disregard a stop sign at the intersection of Gonzalez and Alnor in San Elizario, TX. The Deputy conducted a traffic stop on the said vehicle at 1200 block of Gonzalez. Upon making contact with the driver, the Deputy noticed the driver to be highly intoxicated. The driver eventually failed a standard field sobriety test & was placed under arrest for DRIVING WHILE INTOXICATED. The driver was handcuffed (hands behind his back) & placed in the backseat of the Deputys’ patrol unit.
During the time the Sheriff’s Deputy was outside of his patrol unit turning over the drivers vehicle to the wrecker service, the intoxicated driver managed to free himself and slide his arms downward allowing him to now have his arms in front of him (still handcuffed). At that point the driver opened the barrier window (which divides the front & backseats), climbed to the drivers seat & drove off with the patrol unit.
Assistance was immediately summoned where responding Deputies converged to the area of occurrence. The unit was spotted in the desert near canal banks in the same immediate area. After an intense search, the suspect was spotted in a nearby field & taken into custody.
The patrol unit was recovered within minutes & found with no significant damage.
The suspect was identified as DANIEL SOLIS (36) of the 1300 block of Saltillo San Elizario, TX. He was arrested & charged with UNAUTHORIZED USE OF VEHICLE and ESCAPE FROM CUSTODY.
