EL PASO, TEXAS-  During the week July 27-30, 2009, the Texas Commission on Jail clip_image002Standards (TCJS) inspected the El Paso County Detention Facility (Downtown) and the Jail Annex. The TCJS inspectors found both facilities to be in compliance with no deficiencies “surpassing all inspections from previous years”. The final report by the Executive Director of the Texas Commission of Jail Standards and the Certificate of Compliance will be sent to El Paso County Sheriff Richard Wiles and County Judge Anthony Cobos in accordance with VTCA Chapter 511 and the Texas Minimum Jail Standards.

PM J ANNEX17The Commission inspects all areas of the County jails, to include its records and reports, inmate services, health and safety, emergency procedures, medical and food services, and overall operation and management of the facilities.

This is the 12th year in a row the Texas Commission on Jail Standards has certified the El Paso County Detention Facilities (Downtown Jail/Jail Annex).

The Commission inspectors complimented the Sheriff and Command Staff on the professionalism and knowledge of the staff assigned to these facilities.  The inspectors also commented on the cleanliness and security of the facilities, as well as the exemplary way all officers carried out their duties and provided for a safe and clean environment for all County inmates.

From Chief Deputy Sylvia Aguilar to Office employees:Chief Deputy Sylvia Aguilar

“Even though there are days you may feel your efforts are not recognized, I assure  you that those efforts are recognized and culminated in events such as this inspection.  However, this can only be accomplished because of your tradition of excellence and sense of pride that you accomplish through your strength, grace, and dignity.  As Vince Lombardi once said, "Individual commitment to a group effort-that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work".

For me the experience of this inspection was one of the most humbling moments in my law enforcement career.  The excellence of tradition resonated through the halls, cells, elevators, and every foot in each of these facilities as I walked with the inspectors and watched as our employees answered questions, responded to requests, and made every effort to be the best.   This was done with complete sincerity and honesty: without making excuses or blaming lack of resources.  You come to work every day, you give all that you have, and you do it because this is the legacy you have instilled within our Office.  Because of this, I am honored to serve as your Chief Deputy, and I thank you for doing justice to the Sheriff's Office.”- said Chief Deputy Sylvia Aguilar
