DATE / TIME: Thursday, August 6, 2009 8:30 AM
RESULT: INVESTIGATION CONTINUES / VICTIM IDENTIFIED
EL PASO, TX– Early Thursday morning 08-06-09 at 8:30 AM, Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to Ascarate Lake (southwest island area) located at 6900 Delta El Paso, TX in reference to a possible drowning. Deputies arrived on scene a short time later to find the El Paso Fire Department already on scene. According to Fire Officials, they arrived for a water rescue which turned out to be a body recovery. EPFD successfully removed the deceased from the water canal (located next to the swimming pool area). Crimes Against Persons Detectives arrived a short time later & began canvassing the area commencing the investigation. The Medical examiner arrived a short time later.
Detectives determined they would be handling this case as an Unattended Death. The Sheriff’s Office handles all unattended deaths as homicides until ruled otherwise- which means the procedural aspect & delicacy of investigating homicides.
Early Friday morning 08-07-09 an autopsy on the deceased was conducted. Preliminary finding indicate the cause of death appears to be an accidental drowning but toxicology results are pending so the outcome may change.
Late Friday afternoon 08-07-09, after more than 24hrs of trying to get in contact with the victims family members- notification was made to next of kin.
The Victim was identified as Juan Flores Castillo (78) of the 100 block of Rio Monte el Paso, TX.
AT THIS POINT, FOUL PLAY DOES DO NOT APPEAR TO BE INVOLVED, HOWEVER- TOXICOLOGY RESULTS ARE PENDING.
