What is NATIONAL NSleeping half-moonGHT OUT?

imageThe introduction of National Night Out, “America’s Night Out Against Crime”, in 1984 began an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

The National Association of Town Watch’s (NATW) National Night Out program culminates annually, on the first Tuesday of August which is the day it is also recognized and celebrated by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

The first National Night Out, introduced by NATW’s Executive Director, Matt Peskin, in 1984, took place on Tuesday, August 7th 1984.  That first year, 2.5 million Americans took part across 400 communities in 23 states.  NNO now involves over 37 million people and 15,000 communities from all fifty states, U.S. Territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide.

There is a nationwide ongoing scam involving individuals falsely representing themselves as utility companies who are requiring immediate payment to be made to prevent service(s) from being shut off.  The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is reminding citizens to be aware of the scam and to verify with their utility service if such payment is required.
