EL PASO TEXAS- On Sunday, 08-04-13 at approximately 11:10 PM, Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a commercial vehicle fire in the parking lot of a truck stop located at the 1300 block of Horizon Blvd.

Upon arrival, Deputies saw the rear portion of a tractor trailer on fire that was located near the fuel pumps.  Horizon and Socorro Volunteer Fire fighters arrived on scene and extinguished the fire.  An El Paso Police Department Fire Marshal was summoned to the scene and determined the cause of the fire to be from the trailer’s rear brakes which locked and caused friction thereby igniting the trailer.  The loss of the trailer was valued at approximately $50K.  The property inside of the trailer was valued at approximately $150K.  Love’s Truck Stop did not sustain any property damage.

The introduction of National Night Out, “America’s Night Out Against Crime”, in 1984 began an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

The National Association of Town Watch’s (NATW) National Night Out program culminates annually, on the first Tuesday of August which is the day it is also recognized and celebrated by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

The first National Night Out, introduced by NATW’s Executive Director, Matt Peskin, in 1984, took place on Tuesday, August 7th 1984.  That first year, 2.5 million Americans took part across 400 communities in 23 states.  NNO now involves over 37 million people and 15,000 communities from all fifty states, U.S. Territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide.
