“We Serve With Pride”

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office participated in a Click It or Ticket grant that ran from May 19th through June 1st. The purpose for this campaign was to bring to light the importance of wearing a seatbelt and to reduce serious and fatal injuries. The success of the program came from brining awareness to the public, maximizing the visibility of enforcement to the public, and focusing on those individuals driving without their seatbelts. During the two week enforcement period, the Sheriff’s Office issued 68 citations for seatbelt violations along with 17 citations for other various traffic violations (total of 85).

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), if all passenger vehicle occupants age 5 and older had worn seat belts, an additional 3,031 people could have been saved in 2012. Most fatal crashes happen within 25 miles from home and at speeds of less than 40 mph.

State laws passed in 2009 included new safety belt requirements for both drivers and passengers. All passengers (including adults) in the back seat now must be buckled up, and children younger than 8 years old have to ride in a child safety seat or booster seat unless they are 4 feet 9 inches tall. Fines range from $25 to $250 plus court costs.
