El Paso, Texas – In September of 2014, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office received information from Commissioner Carlos Leon’s office in reference to thefts at Ascarate Park. An investigation was immediately started resulting in the arrest of Ascarate Park account clerk Mayra Navarette for 24 counts of forgery.

During the course of the investigation into Ms. Navarette, anomalies were discovered in the cash transactions from the rentals of the softball fields at Ascarate Park. In particular it was noted that transactions involving Park Manager Rey Chavez were not entered into the County’s software system for accepting fees. Further investigation revealed Mr. Chavez had not deposited thousands of dollars in rental fees he collected from a softball league into the County’s bank accounts, which was verified by the County Auditor’s office.

Rey Chavez was placed on paid administrative leave in December and was fired by the County on January 15th, 2015. Rey Chavez was arrested at his home this morning and charged with Theft by a Public Servant Over $20,000 and under $100,000.
