El Paso, TX – Sheriff Richard Wiles congratulates Detention Officer Yvette Rodriguez for being certified by Mental Health First Aid USA as an instructor in adult Mental Health First Aid course.

Officer Rodriguez achieved her certification after completing and passing a 5-day interactive training. Rodriguez may now instruct an 8-hour course that teaches how to help someone experiencing a mental health crisis.

During training students learn about depression and mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, psychosis and substance use disorders. They are taught to use the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan to assist:

Assess for risk of suicide or harm.

Listen without judgment.

Give reassurance and information.

Encourage appropriate professional help.

Encourage self-help and other support strategies.

A partnership with the El Paso del Norte Health Foundation has allowed the certification of two previous Mental Health First Aid instructors who have trained 31 supervisors (Commanders, Lieutenants, and Sergeants), 60 Corporals and 24 Detention Officers have also been trained in the past six months.
