"ABOVE AND BEYOND"

On June 19th, 2022,  at approximately 9:30 pm  Sheriff’s Deputies were called out to the 3900 block of Vanderveer in reference to a Structure Fire.  Fully engulfed in flames was a trailer home attached to a single residence.

Upon arrival of Deputy Prospero noticed family members were trying to make entry into the engulfed home to secure religious items.  Deputy Prospero also met up with a gentleman Daniel Cardenas who is a Detention Officer with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.  Mr. Cardenas was on his way home when he observed the large fire.  As he ran towards the burning home he noticed 2 females standing inside the trailer home.  Without hesitation he ran inside to help the two ladies out also assisting them with the personal items they wanted to take.  Mr. Cardenas did not stop there, he went back and assisted the Father and Mother getting them out of the trailer.

Mr. Cardenas did make a statement to the family “lo material se recupera, la vida no”, which translates to “you can recuperate material, but not your life.”

Mr. Cardenas’s fitness attire was far from providing any protection from heat and flames, yet Officer Cardenas, without due regard for his own safety, continued on.

Detention Officer Daniel Cardenas demonstrated a high degree of selflessness and bravery that is uncommon.
