District Attorney - 34th Judicial District

  • Meet the DA
  •
  • Jaime Esparza, now serving in his third term as the Chief Prosecutor in El Paso, Culberson, and Hudspeth Counties, manages an office of approximately 146 people, including 76 prosecutors and nearly 70 staff members with 15 investigators. (inside the D.A.'s Office)
  •
  • Beginning his 10th year in office, Jaime Esparza was recently awarded the "Visionary Award" by the El Paso Police Department for his contributions to enhance local law enforcement and the criminal justice system. He has been recognized for implementing the District Attorney's Information Management System, or DIMS, which has streamlined the efficiency of the arrest and booking process and allows law enforcement officers and Assistant District Attorneys to interface with each other 24 hours a day about criminal cases.
  •
  • District Attorney Esparza is dedicated to working with his colleagues across the nation to find better ways to ensure community safety and become more effective prosecutors. He currently serves as president-elect of the TDCAA (Texas District and County Attorney's Association) and serves on the Board of the NDAA (National District Attorney's Association).
  •
  • With his "no-nonsense" stance on drugs and drug traffickers, Mr. Esparza organized the coalition of Southwest Border Prosecutors in an effort to collaborate with the Federal Government and continue a successful partnership to handle the influx of drugs entering the country at the international ports-of-entry. Locally, He serves as an Executive Board Member of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), Vice Chair of the West Texas High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area and Vice-Chair of the Southwest Border HITDA.
  •
  • Mr. Esparza will tell you that one of the most important functions of his office is the Victim's Assistance Program. While there have been many advances in the rights afforded to victims of crime, there is much more to do. Together with the Texas Attorney General's Office, El Paso County provides area victims with a 24-hour hotline in order to access current information through the Texas VINE - (Victim Information and Notification Everyday).
  •
  • Mr. Esparza's interest in children's issues lead him to implement El Paso's first Child Fatality Review Team and other worthwhile initiatives like Children's Court and the Maria Alert. He is a founding board member of the Advocacy Center for the Children of El Paso, a facility where several agencies collaborate and focus on the needs of children who have been victims of crime.
  •
  • Mr. Esparaza was licensed to practice law in 1983 and is Board Certified in Criminal law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He served as a prosecutor for the Harris County District Attorney's Office for four years before returning to El Paso to serve as an Assistant District Attorney and Public Defender for the County of El Paso until 1992 when he became the 34th Judicial District's first elected Hispanic District Attorney.

  • Jaime Esparza, a native El Pasoan, is a graduate of Burgess High School, University of Texas at Austin and the University of Houston Law Center. He and his wife Noelia live in East El Paso with their four children-Diego, Adrian, Elena, and Enrique.
