  • Texas Bar names Esparza 2005 Prosecutor of the Year
  •
  • The Texas State Bar Association recognized Jaime Esparza, District Attorney for El Paso, Culberson and Hudspeth Counties, recently as the 2005 Prosecutor of the Year. The award is recognized as one of the highest honors a prosecutor in the state of Texas may receive from the State Bar. Only one such award is given out every year.
  •
  • "Esparza is a tough-minded leader and career prosecutor, said Rob Kepple, Texas District and County Attorney's Association (TDCAA) executive director. "He is intelligent, and a visionary, and his innovative local law enforcement and criminal justice systems serve as a model for his peers across the state."
  •
  • A party to congratulate Esparza as the first Hispanic in Texas and the first prosecutor from El Paso to receive this award will be given by his staff, friends and family from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday, September 26 at the El Paso District Attorney's Office.
  •
  • Among Esparza's most notable accomplishments, highlighted during the award ceremony, are his leadership in seeking and securing federal reimbursement for local prosecution of drug cases along the U.S.-Mexico border and his innovation in streamlining the arrest and booking process of those charged with crimes. He is also a passionate supporter of victim's rights and providing assistance to those hurt by crime.
  •
  • Esparza is currently serving his fourth term as District 34's district attorney. He actively prosecutes criminals himself and manages and office of 78 prosecutors, 72 staff members and 18 investigators.
  •
  • "This is a tremendous honor and I am both excited and humbled to be recognized in this way," Esparza said, after receiving the award. "I'm especially thankful to my family, staff, friends and colleagues who have been instrumental in all of my accomplishments. I'm also thankful to the TDCAA and the State Bar for this very special award."
