General James H. Carleton

Stationed in California, Carleton was Union cavalry brigadier general. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he commanded the California Column (the volunteer troops from California) set up to discourage invasion of California by the Confederates. Carleton led his troops of “California Boys” across the Arizona Territory on its march to the Rio Grande. They recaptured Ft. Bliss in 1862 and protected the area settlers from Native American attacks and Confederate intrigue.
