Born in Georgia in 1862, Mary I. Stanton
was El Paso teacher who started the Reading Room for Boys in 1894
that became the first El Paso Public Library. After her retirement
from teaching she continued to read, research, and write and eventually
donated 600 to 800 books to establish the first public library
in El Paso and the State of Texas.
