El Paso, Texas – October 21, 2023- The El Paso County Sheriff's Office Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) hosted the first annual Veterans Health Fair, organizing a community outreach event to raise awareness and provide vital resources to veterans and their families. The event featured informative sessions, resource booths, and interactive activities designed to address various needs of veterans, ranging from healthcare and housing to counseling services and educational support. Attendees had the opportunity to connect directly with representatives from organizations, fostering a sense of community and solidarity.
The Sheriff's Office extends heartfelt appreciation to the event's host, Mr. David Sublasky, whose generosity and dedication made this event possible. The event served as a platform for organizations across the region to share their resources, ensuring that veterans and their families can access the support they need. Their commitment to our veterans and their families is truly commendable. Together, we can make a significant impact and assist those who have served our country.

NATIONAL MILITARY ORDER OF THE WORLD WARS OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE AWARD

El Paso, Texas – On June 19, 2022, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office received a call about a structure fire at 3900 Vanderveer. Upon arriving, a Deputy escorted the family to safety. During the investigation, Deputies discovered that an off-duty Detention Officer, Daniel Cardenas, had rushed into the burning building to retrieve necessary religious items and property. He identified himself to the Deputies, explaining that he had been driving home and saw the large fire. The family's mother was hesitant to leave without her belongings, but Cardenas convinced her she could replace the material possessions, not a life. He was awarded the El Paso Sheriff's Office Life Saving Medal for his bravery by Honorable Sheriff Richard D. Wiles.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office submitted Cardenas' name for the Lifesaving Award through the Greater El Paso Chapter of the Military Order of World Wars. On March 18, 2023, the Greater El Paso Chapter of the Military Order of World Wars held a meeting at Applebee's on George Dieter, where the Chapter presented Cardenas' with a Certificate of Appreciation Lifesaving Award. Without Cardenas' quick actions, the victims could have sustained permanent, debilitating injuries or worse. Instead, his bravery and selflessness saved the lives of the family.
On October 21, 2023, the Greater El Paso Chapter of the Military Order of World Wars held another meeting at the exact location where Cardenas received an additional award for the Individual Law & Order Outstanding Performance Award and the Outstanding Law & Order Service Award. The National Public Service Law & Order Committee at the National Military Order of World Wars Convention selected him for these prestigious awards. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office congratulates Peace Officer Cadet Daniel Cardenas on his accomplishments and is proud to call him one of their own.

WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES 2023

El Paso, Texas – October 19, 2023- The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and the Sheriff’s Officers Association participated in the annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is a campaign that raises awareness for gender violence. Its trademark component is the walk men and women take together in solidarity to end domestic violence. Deputies and supporters from around the city walked side by side in red heels to show their support for the women and children of the YWCA Sara McKnight Transitional Living Center. This event is a powerful way to unite the community and raise awareness of domestic violence's impact.

Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon at the 7800 Block of Kiely – Rogelio Jose Jacquez

El Paso, Texas – On September 22, 2023, at approximately 11:00 P.M., El Paso Sheriff's Office Deputies responded to an Injured Party call at the 7800 block of Kiely Dr. Canutillo, TX. Upon arrival, deputies located a female on the pavement covered in blood on her neck and upper back. The female was transported to a local hospital for her injuries. The Major Crimes Unit was requested and took over the investigation. During the investigation, it was discovered that the female had been stabbed and had sustained life-threatening injuries. Detectives identified Rogelio Jose Jacquez Jr., 27 years old, as responsible for the stabbing. On October 19, 2023, Jaquez was taken into custody at the El Paso Sheriff's Office Northwest Patrol Station. While being taken into custody, Jacquez became uncooperative and combative towards deputies. Jacquez was subsequently booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly and Resisting Arrest with a total bond of $252,500.

Most Wanted Fugitives Week of October 20, 2023

MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT AT MILE MARKER 56 On I-10

EL PASO TX- On October 22, 2023, at approximately 11:00 p.m., El Paso County Sheriff's Office Deputies from the Peter J. Herrera Patrol Station were dispatched to mile marker 56 on Interstate 10 in reference to a vehicle disturbance as initial calls from the public were of a vehicle traveling the wrong way on the westbound lanes. As Deputies responded to that call, that vehicle was involved in a head-on crash with a tractor-trailer. The occupants of the tractor sustained minor injuries as the wrong-way driver had no signs of life. Shortly afterward that vehicle became engulfed in flames as Special Traffic Investigators were requested to the scene and investigated the crash. At this time, no further information will be released on the driver or investigation until the next of kin is notified.

High Risk Inmate Transport Course

El Paso, Texas – The El Paso County Sheriff's Office Region 8 Training Academy conducted the inaugural three-day High-Risk Inmate Transport course for Detention Officers on October 17th, 2023. The development and organization of this program were spearheaded by Range Master Justin Martinez, with the valuable support of all academy instructors.
The objective of this course is to enhance the preparedness of our personnel in transporting inmates outside the boundaries of our detention facilities. Attendees of this course were exposed to comprehensive scenario-based training encompassing firearms tactics, taser deployment, restraint application, defensive tactics, emergency radio procedures, and various other relevant skills.
The objective of this course was to create a comprehensive and dynamic training program that exposes Armed Detention Officers to intense situations, enabling them to effectively respond, engage, or counter potential escape, attack, or ambush scenarios while in the process of inmate transportation.
This training instills in Armed Detention Officers the necessary confidence to depend on their tactical training and enhances their readiness to employ their weapon if the situation demands it. This course will be made available on a quarterly basis to enhance the preparedness of our armed Detention Officers in the event of an emergency.

HORIZON HIGH SCHOOL HOMECOMING PARADE 2023

El Paso, Texas – On Wednesday, October 18, 2023, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office Community Services Section, Patrol Commander Ryan Urrutia, and Commissioner Iliana Holguin participated in the 2023 Horizon High School Homecoming Parade. The parade's theme for this year was "Under the Sea," it started at the intersection of Eastlake and Kenazo and concluded at the Horizon High School.
During the event, the school organized a pep rally at Scorpion Football Stadium, where they followed different customary school practices, including performances by the cheer and dance teams. The event culminated in a magnificent fireworks exhibition.
The Sheriff's Office participated in the parade with its vintage 1953 Chevy pickup truck, the 2015 Ford Explorer commemorating our fallen Deputy Peter J. Hererra, and the 2018 Harley Davidson Electra Glide Motorcycles from the traffic division. Ms. Ylva Salas, Career and Technology Education Teacher and Student Council Sponsor at Horizon High School, oversaw the well-coordinated event.
We want to extend special recognition to the entire Horizon High School staff, the student body, and the community of Horizon for ensuring the El Paso County Sheriff's Office's participation in this significant community event. The school upholds its motto, "Scorpion Strong." Horizon, the community felt the "sting of the scorpion" last night. Scorpions, thank you for your efforts in making this event possible.

LOWE’S SAFETY AWARENESS DAY

El Paso, Texas – The El Paso County Sheriff's Office Community Services Section teamed up with Lowe's Home Improvement located at 12100 Montana and 11950 Rojas, El Paso, TX, on Saturday, October 14, 2023, to celebrate Safety Awareness Day. The event featured several attractions, including the 2008 E.R.T. Armored vehicle, the 2005 GMC Hummer 2, and the 2015 Ford Explorer Interceptor, which commemorates the memory of Deputy Peter John Herrera. There was also a D.I.Y. workshop for kids, where they built wooden model fire trucks.

El Paso, Texas – The El Paso County Sheriff's Office Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) walked in support of the annual NAMIWalks El Paso event on October 14, 2023. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) provides advocacy, education, support, and public awareness so all individuals and families affected by mental illness can build better lives.
NAMIWalks is a nationally supported event that promotes mental health awareness. Through community support and partnerships, NAMIWalks can raise awareness and funding to provide free, top-rated programs and services. The walk brings the community together to achieve the kind of awareness that fights stigma and to add even greater unity to our community.
