TABC seeks to cancel permits at three El Paso Bars following long-term narcotics investigation

El Paso, Texas - The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) conducted a long-term investigation as a result of citizen’s complaints of narcotics and human trafficking at several local bars: Golden Nugget Bar (BG615814) located at 5711 Trowbridge, Doll House Bar (BG402932) located at 5715 Trowbridge and George Washington Lounge (BG257713) located at 3900 Montana in El Paso. The long-term investigation indicated that several bar employees known to be associates of the violent Barrio Azteca gang were directly involved in the distribution of cocaine at the bars.

The TABC presented a total of 59 delivery of controlled substance felony cases on 29 suspects to the El Paso District Attorney’s Office. With assistance from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Federal Bureau of Investigations, Department of Homeland Security Investigations, El Paso Police Department, El Paso County Sheriff's Office, El Paso Independent School District, and Horizon City Police Department, TABC conducted a warrant round-up in which 12 of 29 suspects were arrested. At least two of those arrested were confirmed members of the Barrio Azteca gang directly involved in the drug trafficking activities.

In conjunction with the warrant round-up, TABC worked with the El Paso County Attorney's Office to seek temporary restraining orders to immediately close down all three bars. Agents from TABC Special Investigations Unit and Financial Crimes Unit served the managers of the bars respectively with 38 administrative notices that contained 100 various violations of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code. The permit holders were cited for sale, delivery, and possession of narcotics by the employees, prostitution, solicitation of an alcoholic beverage by employees, and allowing employees to engage in continued and organized criminal activities contrary of the law designed to protect the general welfare, health, peace, morals, and safety of the people and the public sense of decency.

"TABC license holders who fail to legally manage or control their establishments and allow nefarious activities to take place on the premises do not deserve the privilege to operate a bar in Texas," said Assistant Chief Dexter Jones. "TABC will continue to partner with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to eradicate bad business behavior occurring inside of bars and restaurants permitted by the TABC," he added. "License holders have an obligation to comply with the law, and the people of Texas expect them to actively contribute to the overall quality of life and safety of their community," said Jones.

Anyone with information about illegal activity occurring in a TABC licensed location should call their local TABC office by dialing 1-888-THE-TABC. In El Paso, call 915-351-3697.

Organizaciones Se Unen Para Ofrecer Asistencia Gratuita En La Elaboracion De Testamentos Médicos

Local Organizations Unite To Offer Free Assistance To Execute “Medical Wills”
El Paso County Attorney's Office and the University Medical Center of El Paso are partnering with the Housing Authority of the City of El Paso (HACEP) to promote the use of Advance Medical Directives (“medical wills”) in the community, particularly among the beneficiaries of public housing programs in El Paso County. The pilot program was created to inspire, educate and empower the public about the importance of advance care planning. As part of the campaign to promote the use of the “living wills,” attorneys from the County Attorney’s Office, and volunteers from the University Medical Center will be offering free assistance regarding advance care planning and advance directive forms on Tuesday August 19, 2014, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Sun Plaza Complex, 1221 San Antonio. All residents of El Paso County are encouraged to come and get assistance drafting their advance directives forms.

Advance directives are legal documents that allow you to convey your decisions about end-of-life care ahead of time. They provide a way for you to communicate your wishes to family, friends, and health care professionals, and to avoid confusion later on.

A Directive to Physicians or Living Will tells how you feel about care intended to sustain life. You can accept or refuse medical care. There are many issues to address, including:

  • The use of dialysis and breathing machines
  • If you want to be resuscitated if breathing or heartbeat stops
  • Tube feeding
  • Organ or tissue donation
  • Blood transfusions

A Medical Power of Attorney allows individuals to designate someone they trust to make health decisions if they are unable to do so.

As part of the program, the participating organizations will host similar events every month at different HACEP locations around El Paso. The events are open to the general public.

Inscripciones Anticipadas Para El Evento Ciclista “Cycle For Change 2014” Inician Este Fin De Semana

Early Registration For The 2014 “Cycle For Change” Cycling Event To Begin This Weekend

Save $5 by registering Saturday at the grand opening of the new Crazy Cat Cyclery

El Paso County Attorney Jo Anne Bernal today announced that this year's "Cycle for Change: From Surviving to Thriving" will take place on Sunday October 26, 2014.

The cycling event entitled "Cycle for Change: From Surviving to Thriving" was created last year by the County Attorney's Office in collaboration with Villa Maria, a local shelter for homeless women, to shift the focus from breaking the cycle of violence, to changing the victim's mindset once the cycle is broken.

The purpose behind the event is to raise monies for local survivors of domestic violence for educational opportunities and therapeutic services. Last year, the inaugural event saw almost 300 cyclists and was able to raise more than $5,000 in scholarship monies, which were distributed to survivors of domestic violence earlier this month.

This year, the County Attorney's Office is excited to welcome Crazy Cat Cyclery to the list of community organizations that support this innovative and worthwhile cause.

Crazy Cat Cyclery will host early registration for the 2014 "Cycle for Change" at the grand opening of its new store located at 2800 N. Stanton, this Saturday, August 2nd, from noon to 5:00 p.m.  The ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

This Saturday only, participants can register at Crazy Cat Cyclery for a reduced rate of $20. Thereafter, early registration cost will jump to $25.
