Sportspark
The El Paso County Sportspark, currently under renovations, will be the premier location for T-ball, baseball and softball tournaments in this region spanning hundreds of miles. Several baseball leagues are already utilizing the Sportspark. My office has also met with interested parties who want to bring big tournaments to El Paso.
At the time I took office, construction crews were just beginning to renovate the existing fixtures in the park. I committed to you that I would make it a priority to monitor the progress of the renovations.
The first phase of the project is very close to being completed. Although there still remains some work, many leagues are already in competition. What patrons will see is the expanded administration building, a bigger concession stand, better walk ways with canopied areas for relaxing, shaded spectator seats and much improved batting cages.
To make the visit to the park even more enjoyable, families will be able to enjoy our new clubhouse that will have a full service restaurant on the second floor. The construction of the new clubhouse will be completed in the near future. It will be fully ADA compliant and will feature family restrooms to accommodate our parents with infant children. Additional family restrooms are located in other areas of the park.
As mentioned before, I have been very aware of the progress at the park. When it seemed that progress was slowing, I had my staff get involved to some degree in meetings between the county and contractors. Several issues that had not been resolved and were slowing progress caught our attention and were taken care of. While it was not my intention to micro-manage, it has been my experience in the past that compromises are easier to come by when upper management takes the role of close observer.
The fall season is from August until November and the Spring Season is from February until June. Our leagues include T-Ball for ages 6 thru 7, pitching by coach and baseball and softball ages 9 thru 14. Adult leagues include the Law Enforcement League, Men's Thursday Night Softball League, Men's International Softball League, and the El Paso Christian Softball League. Because of the great climate in El Paso, leagues are able to play all year.
