Commander Jerome Washington began his career with the Sheriff's Office in 2002 with the Detention Bureau. Early in his career, he served as a Detention Officer and shortly thereafter as a Floor Control Officer. As he progressed through the Sheriff's Office Law Enforcement Bureau, he held the rank of Deputy Sheriff, serving as a Field Training Officer. Following this assignment, he was promoted to Detective and was assigned to the Major Crimes Unit, investigating homicides and sexually related crimes. In addition to this assignment, he acted as an FBI Taskforce Officer investigating violent crime and cross-border violence.
Commander Washington later served in the Patrol and Criminal Investigations Divisions as a Sergeant, supervising patrol shift operations and criminal and narcotic investigations. He was promoted to Lieutenant and led the Peter J. Herrera Patrol Station and the Crisis Intervention Team. Commander Washington currently oversees the Planning, Accreditation, and Inspections Division, where he manages operational functions for the Law Enforcement CALEA accreditation, provides support to agency personnel, and inspects all agency sections for policy compliance.
Commander Washington has a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University. He graduated from the 281st Session of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy. He holds Master Peace Officer and Jailer certifications from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, as well as proficiencies as a Mental Health Officer and instructor, with an additional proficiency in firearms instruction.
