  • Ruben Orozco
  • Saturday, September 17, 2005 at 1:30 AM- Sergeant Ruben Orozco was returning from working an assignment at the Sun Bowl. He was involved in an accident on Interstate 10 (east) Mile Marker 24 near the Trowbridge exit. He was the single occupant in his patrol car. Sgt. Orozco lost his life as a result of the accident. Sergeant Orozco is survived by his wife Mary, his children Liz, Joann, Jose, Ruben Jr. and his pride & joy, grandchildren- Sabrina, Randy, Cyera & Alessandra.
  • Sgt. Orozco was born on July 24, 1954. He began his career with the Sheriff's Office as Detention Officer December 1, 1980. Appointed to Deputy Sheriff - December 1, 1981, Promoted to Detective- October 1, 1984. Promoted to Sergeant- August 21, 1995. Sgt. Orozco was assigned to various duties & received numerous recognitions throughout his career with the Sheriff's Office which include; Patrol Division, Special Operations Division, Administration Division - Internal Affairs, Criminal Investigations Division, Detention Division, Awarded Supervisor of the year last year for the Texas Narcotic Officers Association, Leader of the Hostage Negotiation Team, TCLEOSE Instructor March 1, 1992, Master Peace Officer March 18, 2002, & U.S. Marine Corps - Honorable Discharge August 1, 1978.
  • Prior to his passing, Sergeant Orozco had been involved with Special Olympics Texas for 13 years, and helped coordinate the Torch Run in El Paso. Now every year the Torch Run is held in his honor.
