The Reading of the Names Ceremony is an annual event organized by the El Paso District Attorney’s Office to honor victims of violent crimes in the region. Held during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, the 2025 ceremony took place on Sunday, April 6, at the Crime Victims Memorial in Yucca Park, located in El Paso’s Lower Valley.

This solemn gathering serves as a poignant reminder of the lives lost and the enduring impact on their families and the community.

In the 2025 ceremony, the names of 1,957 victims were read aloud, each followed by the tolling of a bell.

The Reading of the names Ceremony stands as a testament to the El Paso District Attorney's Office dedication to acknowledging the victims of violent crimes and supporting their families through collective remembrance and solidarity.

Our office is working with local community stakeholders to expand the memorial, which has run out of space for names, to ensure future victims of crime are remembered.

The District Attorney's Office hosts the annual Region 19 Mock Trial competition in conjunction with the El Paso Young Lawyer's Association each year in early February.

Held over two days, the 2025 competition boasted nine high schools and over 100 participating students. Participants assumed roles as attorneys and witnesses, presenting both prosecution and defense arguments in a fictional criminal case.

The Region 19 Mock Trial Competition not only provides students with a platform to develop their legal acumen but also offers invaluable exposure to the workings of the judicial system, fostering skills in critical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork.

If you are interested in starting a Mock Trial team at your school, contact Stephanie Valle at s.valle@epcountytx.gov for more information.
