El Paso County Sheriff Richard Wiles, through the Sheriff’s Association of Texas, awarded Arturo Leyva a $500 scholarship to assist him with academic expenses. The Sheriff’s Association of Texas awards scholarships to eligible students attending a college or university. The student must be a son, daughter, or grandchild of a Sheriff, former Sheriff, Sheriff’s Office employee, or a Peace Officer serving in the State of Texas. The scholarships are awarded in the Spring and Fall of each year.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to congratulate Arturo and hopes he does well at Texas Tech University in Lubbock Tx.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to help the citizens of El Paso County stay safe during this holiday shopping season. Citizens can become vulnerable to theft and other similar crimes and the Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the citizens of tips that can help them enjoy this holiday shopping season.

                      SHOPPING SAFETY TIPS:

· Try to park in a well lit area if possible

· Be aware of your surroundings before you exit your vehicle

· Lock your car!

· Don’ t leave valuable items visible inside your vehicle. Leave all of your belongings and purchased items in the trunk

· Avoid carrying large amounts of cash

· Leave birth certificates, social security cards and other documents with personal identifying information at home in a secure place

· Try not to carry too many bags or packages at one time. Once you have purchased several iems, put them in the trunk of your vehicle and continue shopping.

· Do not shop alone, especially at night time and always tell someone where you are going

· Do not hesitate to ask store security for an escort to your vehicle and report all suspicious activity to authorities.

EL PASO TEXAS- The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting increased DWI enforcement during this Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. There will be an additional 15 Deputies patrolling the streets of El Paso County in high risk locations during times when  most alcohol related incidents occur. This increased DWI enforcement will be from November 27th through November 30th.

Sun City Cab Co. and L&F Distributors are proactively seeking to prevent drunk driving during the holidays and offer a free cab ride as one option for individuals who might have had too much to drink.  Be responsible and prevent drunk driving by calling for a free cab ride.

On 11-25-13 at approximately 5:00am, Sheriff’s Office Deputies from the Vinton substation went to the 1300 block of Malmo Rd. in Canutillo Tx in search of a subject listed on the Sheriff’s Office Most Wanted list.  Deputies located Jacob Dollar inside his home and arrested him without incident. Subject Dollar was later booked into the El Paso County  Sheriff’s Office Detention Facility.

On Saturday, November 23rd , the Sheriff’s Office Advisory board, in support of needy families in the county, will give 100 turkeys away. The Advisory Board was generous and donated the money to purchase the turkeys. The Sheriff’s Office knows that Thanksgiving is a day spent with family and friends and would hope to make it more memorable with this turkey give away.  The turkeys have been pre-selected for needy families in El Paso County and will be packaged at Sheriff’s Office Headquarters located at 3850 Justice Dr. Advisory board members along with Sheriff’s Office employees will be at the “old” Canutillo Elementary School located at 7000 Fifth Street, in Canutillo from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and give 50 turkeys away.  After that, they will head out to El Buen Pastor Catholic Church located at 311 Peyton Rd in far east El Paso County to give another 50 turkeys away. They will be there from 1:00pm to 3:00 pm.

On 11-16-2013 at approximately 1:45am a Sheriff’s Office Deputy was dispatched to the 12000 of Quetzal Dr in Clint, TX in reference to a possible theft. The Deputy met with the caller who stated he saw three male subjects pushing an ATV through a field adjacent to his property. He believed what the subjects were doing was suspicious and tried to make contact. The three subjects then fled the scene leaving the ATV behind. The Deputies followed the shoe impressions back to where the ATV had been taken. They back tracked about a mile and came to the backyard of a residence located at the 12300 of Sacred Well Rd in Clint Tx. The home owner confirmed that his ATV had been stolen and wished to prosecute.

Deputies went back to where the ATV was abandoned and began a search for the three subjects. Several Border Patrol Agents joined in the search. Law enforcement officials were able to locate three sets of the shoe impressions nearby and followed them to a home located at the 12000 block of Alameda Ave. in Clint Tx. Deputies met with the owners who allowed the Deputies to enter the home. Inside one of the bedrooms were three subjects who admitted to stealing the ATV. They were subsequently arrested for felony theft charges. All three subjects were booked into the El Paso County Jail Annex.

    EL PASO, TEXAS This week’s MANHUNT MONDAY Most Wanted Fugitive is an individual wanted for Evading Authorities. The target is identified as JOHN MADISON CAMPBELL of El Paso, TX.

    On November 11th 2013, Officers from the Horizon Police Department observed a speeding Red Ford F-150 extended cab pickup traveling recklessly in the area of Darrington Rd. and Alderwood Manor. Officers conducted a traffic stop & identified the driver as JOHN MADISON CAMPBELL. A warrants check on CAMPBELL revealed he was wanted on an outstanding criminal warrant for AGGRAVATED ASSAULT W/ DEADLY WEAPON. As Officers instructed CAMPBELL to exit the truck, he fled on foot running west through Emerald Springs Golf Course. HCPD Officers gave chase but lost visual of CAMPBELL a short time later. Officers searched the area for hours but were not able to find CAMPBELL. He knows authorities are looking for him and remains on the run eluding capture. He is wanted on for the Offenses of: EVADING ARREST / DETENTION & the unrelated warrant of AGGRAVATED ASSAULT W/ DEADLY WEAPON.

      On 11-15-13 at approximately 07:45am, Sheriff’s Office Deputies and Deputy United States Marshals assigned to the Lonestar Fugitive Task Force attempted to execute an Indecency with a Child warrant at the 6400 block of Songland in west El Paso. The man they were looking for was named Gustavo Solis. While executing the warrant, Solis fled the residence on foot. El Paso County Sheriff’s Deputies from the Vinton Station and El Paso Police Officers assisted in the search of Solis. A nearby daycare center was advised to keep all the children inside and lock their doors. Canutillo High School, and the Northwest El Paso Community College Campus were also advised of the situation. At about 9:20am Solis was located at the 200 block of Easy Way, just a few blocks from his home. Solis will face and additional charge of Evading Arrest and will be booked into the El Paso County  Sheriff’s Office Detention Facility.

    The Sheriff’s Office Warrants section along with Deputies from the Patrol Division conducted a two day D.W.I. warrant round up called Operation “Last Call” on November 13th and November 14th. Other agencies who assisted in the operation were the Department of Public Safety, the El Paso Police Department and the Constables Office. The operation resulted in the execution of 38 alcohol related warrants as well as the execution 5 other misdemeanor warrants and 10 other felony warrants for a total of 53 warrants executed. In all, 38 subjects were booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility where bond amounts totaled just over $408,000.

    EL PASO TEXAS-  On 11-04-13 at approximately 7:30 AM upper-valley Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the 100 block of McArthur, Canutillo, TX, in reference to an assault where a female/victim 19 years of age was treated by ambulance after being assaulted by two women in an alleyway between La Union and Third St. in Canutillo, TX. Lourdes Alvarado of Canutillo was arrested by Sheriff’s Deputies yesterday afternoon and charged with Assault Causes Bodily Injury after Alvarado and another female assailant arrived in a vehicle and assaulted the victim numerous times. A preliminary investigation revealed the victim was in the alley with an ex-boyfriend at the time of the alleged assault. Lourdes Alvarado was identified as the ex-boyfriend’s mother who told authorities the assault occurred over jealousy issues between her son and his current girlfriend. The investigation continues with charges pending.

    EL PASO, TX- Today, Manhunt Monday’s featured fugitive/Daniel Jacob Valdez surrendered to local authorities and was subsequently booked into the Detention Facility. Since Valdez’s alleged involvement for a violent incident, Valdez was eluding capture. Valdez remains in Jail since his surrender.

    EL PASO TEXAS- On 11-03-13 at approximately 1:30 am Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a fire at the 200 block of E. Main St. in Fabens, TX, after noticing smoke emitting from a business while Deputies were at disturbance call close by. Deputies immediately ran to the building and shut-off the power to begin evacuating nearby residents of an adjacent apartment.  Volunteer Fire Fighters from Fabens, San Elizario, Clint, Socorro and Horizon Fire Departments were summoned to the scene to include an El Paso County ESD#2 Marshall. The damaged was estimated at approximately $200,000.00. The cause of the fire appeared to be an electrical failure (accidental). There were no injuries reported as a result of the fire.

    EL PASO TEXAS- On 11-02-13 at approximately 12:42 PM Upper-Valley Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to Tom Mays Park in reference to a lost hiker and a dog. A Deputy Sargent on duty familiar with the area through training with the Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team initiated a search and made contact with the hiker/VICTIM via cell phone who gave Deputies a description of her location which was near the satellite towers by “Elephants Peak”.  DPS air support was requested to assist with the search in the established perimeter. After a 4 hour search, the VICTIM and the dog were located with the assistance of an officer assisting local authorities.  COMSAR was also summoned to the scene. The VICTIM was evaluated by El Paso Fire Department with no life-threatening injuries reported, however, the canine did sustain lacerations to the front paws.
