Kites in the Sky for Fallen Deputy Peter John Herrera

EL Paso, Texas - On Friday, April 29, 2022, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and attended Alarcon Elementary where students flew kites in memory of Deputy Peter John Herrera.  Deputies joined the students in flying kites and celebrating Deputy Herrera’s memory.  County Commissioner Iliana Holguin and family members of Deputy Herrera were in attendance.

CAREER DAY PRESENTATION AT Jane A. Hambrick Elementary

Hambrick Elementary located at 3535 Nolan Richardson Dr. The presentation was for K-8th grade students. The presentation consisted of career information, marked Sheriff’s H2 patrol vehicle(s), officer equipment and demonstrations by Sheriff’s Office uniformed personnel. Students learned about hiring process as well as the benefits provided by the county. They also received information on the “Ride Along” program.

The presentation consisted of career information, marked Sheriff’s H2 patrol vehicle(s), officer equipment and demonstrations by Sheriff's Office uniformed personnel.  Students learned about the hiring process as well as the benefits provided by the county. They also received information on the "Ride Along" program.

The presentation consisted of career information, marked Sheriff’s patrol vehicles, officer equipment and demonstrations by K9 officers from the Sheriff's Office uniformed personnel.  Students learned about the hiring process as well as the benefits provided by the county. They also received information on the "Ride Along" program.

EXPLORER POST 2005 –TRAINING 4-26-2022

El Paso, Texas- On April 26, 2022, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Community Services Section held training for the Sheriff’s Office Explorer Post 2005. In this session, Explorers were trained and learned handcuffing, room-clearing, and building search techniques.

Sergeant Nevarez conducted a PowerPoint presentation, detailing a four-man formation room entry. Explorers participated and conducted hands-on training, which consisted of techniques before entering the room, and clearing hallways using, one man, two-man, three-man, and four-man formations. Explorers conducted two live scenarios on room clearing.

Explorers had several questions which were addressed relying on real-world lessons learned and experience provided by both Sergeant Nevarez and Deputy Gonzales. Explorers were much more comfortable conducting room-clearing exercises after the training.

The explorer post and its advisors provide explorers with education, training, and important information upon which to base their decision to pursue a career in law enforcement.

STALKING ARREST – JESUS UNZUETA

April 26, 2022

El Paso, Texas – On April 11, 2022, El Paso County Sheriff's Office Deputies responded to the 500 block of Talbot, El Paso County, Texas, in reference to criminal mischief. During the follow-up investigation, Northwest CID Detectives positively identified Jesus Unzueta 68-year-old male, who intentionally caused damage to the victim’s vehicle (under $100.00). After further investigation, Detectives learned that UNZUETA had been stalking the victim on several occasions. Northwest CID Detectives obtained a warrant of arrest for Stalking with a bond of $50,000.00. Through information provided by the Fusion Center, UNZUETA had crossed into Juarez, Mexico, before the warrant was issued. On Saturday, April 23, 2022, UNZUETA was detained by Customs and Protection Officers at the Paseo Del Norte Port of Entry while attempting to enter the United States. UNZUETA was subsequently booked into the El Paso County Jail for Stalking.

CRIMINAL MISCHIEF AT COUNTY ARCHIVES BUILDING - TYLER THORTON

April 26, 2022

El Paso, Texas – On April 25, 2022, at approximately 7:50 pm., El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were dispatched to the 800 block of E. Overland (El Paso County Archives Building) in reference to criminal mischief. When deputies arrived, El Paso Police Department Officers were detaining Tyler Thornton, 28-year-old. Through the course of the investigation, deputies learned that the offender had thrown several rocks at the building, causing a window to break. The County Facilities Manager was contacted and estimated the cost and repair for the window to be $4,200.00. Thornton was subsequently and booked into the El Paso County Jail for Criminal Mischief.

UNAUTHORIZED USE OF A MOTOR VEHICLE – RICARDO OZAETA

April 26, 2022

El Paso, Texas – On Sunday, April 24th, 2022, at approximately 12:30 pm., El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Deputies located a stolen white Ford Taurus out of Las Cruces, New Mexico at the 700 block of N. Fabens Rd. After a brief investigation, the driver, Ricardo Ozaeta, 36-year-old, was taken into custody and booked into the El Paso County Jail for Unauthorized Use of Motor Vehicle under a $10,000 bond.

ATTACK BY DOG ARREST – JOSE LOPEZ

April 21, 2022

El Paso, Texas – On Monday, April 18, 2022, at about 6:54 a.m. El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were dispatched to the 15000 block of Colonia Tierra, in El Paso County, Texas, in reference to three aggressive dog attack. Deputies learned a child had been seriously injured and hospitalized. Through the course of the investigation, the owner of the dogs, Jose Lopez, 29-year-old was determined to be responsible.

On Thursday, April 21, 2022, Lopez was taken into custody for an Attack by Dog Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. At the time of his arrest, he was found to be in possession of a controlled substance. Lopez was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility under a $100,000 bond for the Attack by Dog offense and a $1,000 bond for Possession of Controlled Substance PG 2 <1G. The canines were removed from the residence by the El Paso County Animal Welfare Department.

El Paso, Texas – On April 21, 2022, El Paso County Sheriff's Deputies had Coffee with a Deputy Day at four locations throughout El Paso County. The Deputies' mission during this event is to break down the barriers between law enforcement officers and the citizens they serve. The event allows citizens to discuss issues and learn more about each other. It is a casual atmosphere and the Sheriff’s Office will be having this event throughout the year on a quarterly basis. The goal is to build trust in person, having real conversations about issues that really matter to El Paso County citizens.

FIRE AND SAFETY PRESENTATION AT FABENS MIDDLE SCHOOL

April 20, 2022

El Paso, Texas – On April 14, 2022, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officers, PAWS Program Officers, and Detention Officer Special Response Team, attended Fabens Middle School for a fire and safety presentation.  The students, teachers, and staff at Fabens Middle School would like to thank the Sheriff’s Office for the School Resource Officer Program and the presentations provided to the students.

ANIMAL CRUELTY & WELFARE PRESENTATION AT FABENS HIGH SCHOOL

April 20, 2022

El Paso, Texas – On April 11, 2022, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer and El Paso County Animal Welfare Officers partnered up and had a presentation for the Junior and Senior Class at Fabens High School. The students from the student leadership council reached out to the School Resource Officer requesting to be educated on Animal Cruelty / Animal Welfare. The students and staff were very impressed and appreciated the presentation.
