INVESTIGATES UNATTENDED DEATH IN FABENS TEXAS

July 31, 2018

El Paso, TX – On Monday, July 30, 2018, Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the area of 15100 Island Rd. in Fabens, Texas in reference to a possible drowning. Upon the arrival, deputies met with a representative of the water district who was inspecting the water levels along the irrigation canals and noticed an unresponsive male in the water of the canal. The Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Units responded and began their investigation.

The male victim was removed from the canal and pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators were advised by U.S. Border Patrol agents at the scene that they had encountered a group of suspected undocumented immigrants who entered the United States near Clint, Texas on Sunday, July 29, 2018. Agents stated that one of the individuals entered the canal and was unaccounted for.

At this time the male has not been identified. The Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the case as an unattended death and efforts are being made to identify the deceased who is described as a male Hispanic approximately 5’8” wearing brown in color hiking boots, blue jean pants, and a long sleeve black pullover shirt with a white eagle design on the chest.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public that irrigation canals can be extremely hazardous, you should never play or swim in the canals and never leave children without adult supervision near the canals.

TEEN MAKES CUDDLY DONATION TO SHERIFF’S OFFICE

Meet Amanda Hernandez she is a Girl Scout and Senior at Valle Verde Early College, today she stopped by the Sheriff’s Office with an AMAZING donation.

Through Facebook and the help of her friends and family, she collected over 200 stuffed animals that will be distributed among ALL Sheriff’s Office patrol units.

Amanda recalls being assisted by a Sheriff’s Office deputy during a call for service and how she felt safe with the help of the deputy all the while she couldn’t help but feel like having her favorite stuffed animal could’ve helped her be more at ease.

Her hope is that the stuffed animals she donated will provide comfort to a child involved in a tough situation that may require the Sheriff’s Office response or assistance.

On behalf of Sheriff Wiles and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, we thank Amanda for thinking outside the box and putting together this amazing donation to benefit children in our community.
