SHERIFF’S OFFICE CONDUCTS

SEX OFFENDER OPERATION

October 24, 2018

El Paso, TX – Each year near Halloween, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office conducts inspections of registered sex offenders’ homes to ensure that they are not displaying any decorations which may lure or attract children to their residence.

On Tuesday, October 23rd, 2018, the Sheriff’s Office Sex Offender Registration and Tracking Unit along with deputies assigned to the Targeted Response Unit conducted inspections and verifications at 88 homes of registered Sex Offenders.  Of the 88 homes that were inspected, two were found to be in violation of parole or probation stipulations prohibiting the display of decorations.  The information was forwarded to the respective supervision officers for further investigation.

The Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone to exercise caution and safety this Halloween.

· Never allow children to go out on their own; stay in groups and always have an adult present.

· Wear bright reflective clothing and carry a flashlight and cell phone with you.

· Avoid any homes that are off the main roadway.

· Discard any unwrapped treats, and report any suspicious activity.

· Stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

· Remember the safety and protection of children is everyone’s responsibility.

The Texas Department of Public Safety has a Sex Offender website available to the public; https://records.txdps.state.tx.us/SexOffenderRegistry .

NATIONAL PRESCRIPTION TAKE BACK DAY

OCTOBER 2018

October 19, 2018

El Paso, TX – On Saturday, October 27, 2018, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public an opportunity to prevent prescription drug abuse by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted medications. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

The Sheriff’s Office Patrol Bureau is partnering with DEA on this initiative by opening the three Patrol Stations from 10 am to 2 pm for the public to drop off their unwanted medications. (The DEA cannot accept liquids or needles, only pills or patches.)

· East Montana Patrol Station – 12501 Montana Ave.

· Clint Patrol Station – 190 San Elizario Rd.

· Northwest Patrol Station – 435 E. Vinton Rd, Suite D.

This past April, Americans turned in 475 tons of prescription drugs at more than 5,842 sites operated by the DEA and 4,683 state and local law enforcement partners.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.  Medicines unattended in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.  Year after year the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows the majority of misused and abused prescription drugs are secretly obtained from family and friends. In addition, Americans are now advised their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash - pose potential safety and health hazards.
